Keep Calm and Carry On

There are hundreds of small events that occur throughout the day that have the ability to cause you to stress. You have the power to either let these events get to you or shake them off as you keep moving forward. The more you are able to remain calm in these small moments, the smoother your day will go.

If a big event with the potential to interrupt your day arises, you’ll be more equipped to handle it without a huge hassle. Of course, there are going to be major events that impact you every once in a while. However, you have the power to keep small events in perspective. Learning to remain calm and not sweat the small stuff is vital to a balanced recovery.

Remain Calm

You have the ability to keep yourself calm when something occurs that has the potential to bring you stress. A slight inconvenience or a change of plans can have the power to interrupt your day if you let it. If you let events run you over, you’re going to feel more emotional every time. Small events will have the power to build up over time and leave you feeling angry and overwhelmed.

However, you don’t have to let these events build upon each other. You have the power to keep calm and carry on. It’s important to learn how to go with the flow so that your day is not constantly interrupted by the little things. You can follow some tips and implement different practices to help you stay calm in difficult situations.

Reframe the Situation

If you are feeling inconvenienced, try to reframe the situation you find yourself in. Instead of cursing at a person who inconveniences you, look at the situation in terms of opportunity. What are you able to accomplish now that you wouldn’t have been able to do before this inconvenience?

Try to look at the situation from a new perspective. Take advantage of what is in front of you. You’re allowed to be upset, but don’t let that anger ruin the rest of your day. You can find positivity in the inconvenience.

Try to Solve Problems

Anxiety about an unfamiliar situation is common and can often be expected. However, you have to know how to handle your anxiety and channel it into something more positive. If you are feeling anxious about something, try to brainstorm how you can fix the situation.

First, figure out what is in your control and what is out of your control. You know you can’t change things that are out of your control, so focus on what you can control. Maybe you can find a way to solve your problem so that a bigger situation doesn’t arise. Figure out a game plan to help you solve the problem.

If you can’t do this on your own, reach out to someone who can help. There is usually something that you can do that will help you solve your problem. Look in unexpected places for something that you can do to help you dispel those anxious thoughts.

Be Optimistic

Being optimistic can be a difficult task when you are feeling disappointed. Almost always, however, there is a silver lining. If you are dealing with a setback in your recovery, try to find something positive that came out of the situation. It may not be monumental, but oftentimes the little things are what matter the most.

If you’re able to be optimistic about a difficult situation, you are helping retrain your brain to find the good in any situation. The more you’re able to be optimistic, the more likely your brain will slip into optimism mode when things get difficult. This can help tremendously if you give it a chance.

Focus on the Present Moment

To help you remain calm when things are overwhelming, it’s essential to focus on the present moment. If you’re too far in the past or future, you’re going to feel a lack of control. This leads many people to overthink and freak out about the situation. In order to gain that sense of control back, try focusing on the present moment.

Take a moment to breathe deeply and remind yourself that you have the power to stay calm. Let go of the negative emotions you’re feeling. Ask yourself what you can control about the situation. Do something that will make a direct impact on the situation that will also give you that sense of control you are lacking.

If you’re still struggling to stay present, try to ground yourself. You can practice deep breathing and get in touch with your senses. What around you can you see? What around you can you smell? What around you can you hear, touch, or taste? Try to not get too far into your head. Quiet your thoughts and continue to breathe deeply. You’ll regain that sense of calm that you need.
