Connect with Yourself in Recovery

Your intuition is a powerful tool that you need to harness so you can be successful in your recovery. We’ve all felt that pit in our stomach when we know something isn’t right. That’s our intuition warning us of something. Intuition isn’t always negative, though.

We’ve all also felt that nagging feeling that we should go for something that is a bit out of our comfort zone. Do you usually trust your instincts, or do you stifle that feeling and remain comfortable? Part of your recovery is learning to trust and connect with yourself. Learn more about how you can do that below.

How Does Our Intuition Show Up?

Everyone’s intuition shows up a bit differently. Like we discussed above, it could be that pit in your stomach or the nagging voice in your head. It could be a general sense of comfort or discomfort. It could be a vision, signal, or sign. Whatever way your intuition is speaking to you, make sure you hear its message. Allow yourself to be open to the different ways your intuition shows up for you, and let it guide you in your recovery journey.

Trust Your Intuition

Trusting your intuition can be difficult because there is no data you can look at that will tell you if you are on the right track. Intuition isn’t a fact, but a feeling. It’s something that can calm you down or heighten your anxiety. Going with the intuitive feeling can be difficult when someone relies heavily on their rational mind.

Instead of over-analyzing a situation, take a step back and trust what your body and mind are telling you. It can be uncomfortable, but following your inner guide is what helps you connect with yourself in your recovery.

How Intuitive Are You?

Some of us are very in touch with our inner voice and feelings, but others could use a bit more practice paying attention to and trusting their gut. Think about the last time you did something because it felt right. Do you usually make decisions based on facts, or do you allow your sixth sense to guide you to the right way?

Intuition can mean picking up on good or bad vibes from a new friend, allowing yourself to be spontaneous, or letting your inner being guide your purpose in recovery. If you aren’t identifying with these things, you might need to do a bit of work in delving into your intuition. Go from only trusting a new friend based on concrete facts to allowing yourself to trust them because they seem genuine.

Go from rigidly scheduling your whole day to letting things unfold as you go. Go from trying to control your future to letting your intuition bring you where you need to be. If you aren’t all that intuitive yet, that’s okay. You can practice and get better with time.

How Can I Be More Intuitive?

If you want to work on trusting your intuition, you’re going to have to let go of the stronghold you have on decision-making through logic, and reach toward trusting your feelings. One simple way to let your intuition shine is through meditation. Quiet your mind and allow yourself to be comfortable just being.

Let your body pick up on the sense of what is around you and the messages you’re getting. Being present through mindfulness can help you clarify situations that have brought you worry in the past. If you aren’t getting strong thoughts or feelings from your intuition right off the bat, that’s okay. It takes time to trust your intuition, especially when you have been ignoring it for so long.

Another way to work on cultivating your intuition is to actively set time for yourself to check in with yourself. So much of our day is spent working so hard that we don’t often sit with our feelings and get in touch with ourselves. If you are having trouble finding time for yourself, take five minutes in the morning to embrace the peacefulness before the busy day. Carving out this space for yourself can help you get in touch and listen to your mind and body.

If meditation isn’t right for you, try to get in touch with your creative side. Let your thoughts flow freely through art. You can draw, paint, write, cook, garden, or do any other creative thing you love to do. Instead of constantly “doing,” try to let yourself “be.” Don’t set any expectations for yourself during this creative time. Just let your thoughts flow freely and get in touch with yourself.

Lastly, if you’re struggling with letting your intuition guide you, go beyond yourself to find inspiration and motivation. If self-reflection doesn’t help, pick up a book or watch a video from someone who has more experience trusting their intuition. There are so many resources out there that can help teach you how to handle things that come your way. Talk to a friend and ask them how they work on trusting themselves to guide them. Learning from others can help you learn from yourself.
